Erickson Seniors Achieve 95,477 Minutes of Exercise in One Day
May 19, 2005 – In what may have been the largest one day senior citizen exercise program ever, the residents of the eleven Erickson campuses for people age 62 or older achieved 95,477 minutes of exercise on one May day.
The event, called “Exercise Across Erickson,” was conducted under the auspices of Erickson Health, which claims to be the nation’s largest integrated health and wellness system for people over age 62.
The goal was to promote the active and healthy lifestyle at all Erickson campuses by having as many of Erickson’s 14,000 residents as possible exercising from 12 a.m. to midnight. The goal was to reach as many miles per campus as it would take to travel from one campus to another. The total mileage between all campuses is 1163 miles or 45,520 minutes of company-wide exercise.
Residents did everything from swimming, golfing, walking, running, dancing, bike riding, bowling, exercising in the health club, playing tennis, doing aerobics to tai chi, throughout the campuses, according to Jackie Schatell, a public relations representative with Erickson.
Exercise classes were also held throughout the day. All of the minutes of exercise were recorded and converted into miles, with 40 minutes of exercise equaling one mile. A total of 95,477 minutes of exercise were recorded, which converted to 2,387 miles traveled.
Once the goal was met at each campus, Erickson donated $100 to the American Heart Association. Erickson achieved its overall goal of raising and donating $1,100 in honor of the residents’ achievements.
“The event was a huge success,” says Judy Seger, community service manager, at Seabrook. “Erickson’s residents more than double the goal of 45,520 minutes or 1163 miles.”
